copying attributes > sort order problem

Hi there, hope someone can advise me. I'm setting up a shop with products that have a large number of attributes. I've set one product up perfectly, with the lengthy attributes all set up with proper order numbers. However, when I try and copy these attributes to another product, it loses the sort order numbers. Is this a bug, or am I doing something that is not possible?

It would be extensive work adding in the sort orders by hand (to the tune of possibly 30 hours work for the number of products and attributes there will be) so if anyone can save me some aggro that would be fab!!
